Classic Rust

Our Weekend Memoirs: Mabuhay Restaurant Scroll down for Sunday Stealing A cousin and I went shopping in Pratunam this past weekend. There is a Filipino restaurant there where we had lunch. I was thinking of fall colors. Look at that Bopis. I wonder what's that - This one I know though: beef caldereta. At home I remember there's only one aunt who can cook caldereta well. The one who owns a carenderia, lol... Our sinigang... Operation Tangigi. Slurp! This buko salad is obviously imported. The ice cream taste is very pinoy. Cousin Vi took home the rest of the sinigang and I took care of the caldereta. I still have some leftover in my fridge right now. (Along with the rest of the food I can't consume duh) I'll go heat the bahaw. Sweet Treats

Today I join Small Talk Six!, a Saturday meme on Mom Blogs at Momdot. KARENC , the host says, "since weekends are generally a little slower around the blogosphere, we thought this would be a great way to have a quick, fun, interactive meme.... You can respond to each topic with a list of 6 words, 6 phrases, 6 sentences, 6 paragraphs, or 6 photos." STS topics really are very interesting. I relate with most. I've been wanting to join so join now I do. This Saturday's topic is 6 of your favorite sweet treats in the whole world . Blimey, I got lots but I'll stick to the rule of course, and here are my fave sweets: 1. leche flan (custard) * I love the brownish version 2. moist fruit cake * If it comes from Shangri-La, it's heaven 3. durian almond icecream * The smell of durian is controversial, but when it becomes icecream, especially when it's made by Bonito (Italian), it's addicting. (just a personal opinion) 4. macaroon *I like it a bit dark on top :)...

Quick Meal at S&P

This is what happens when a mom is stricken with temporary laziness to cook which usually happens during an uneventful weekend. Well, if it's eventful, we still normally end up in some restaurant as I don't have a proper kitchen in my apartment. Half an hour before dinner time, my 5-year old was already demanding, "I want chicken!" So we walked to nearby S&P and chicken it is: I ordered mine for the kale and bell pepper strips: We agreed to help each other try another plate: Cj drowned his chicken with his dearly beloved Hi-Q 3 Plus. (Will the vice ever stop?) I finished mine with the only pineapple juice I found in Bangkok that comes close to a Philippine taste. Dinner solved :-) ~ OWM is brought to you by Ebie and Arlene ~

He would have

It's Father's Day and in my case, it's remembering-Papa day. Sweet things that remind me of him have a place in my heart, and in my palate. My father had a sweet tooth. When I was little Mama lectured the two of us about the hazards of too much sweets. Papa did the opposite and secretly allowed me to eat all the sweets I wanted. Sometimes he would take me out to eat ice cream until the tip of my nose was cold. When he passed away in 2005, I lost my 'partner in crime.' I made sure there was enough ice cream for everyone at the funeral reception. It has been four years of collecting memories of him, and the list now includes a weekend self treat that has become rather indulgent. Macadamia choco cheese cake and durian ice cream - my old man would have loved these. This is my imperfect shot of a perfect indulgence: Papa would have spoiled my boys just as he spoiled me. I just know he would have. History has a sweet way of repeating itself, doesn't it? The eldest...

Fruit Season

After several weekends of non-stop out-of-town trips and sightseeings, I finally stayed put in Bangkok this weekend. I have used up my holidays for April and May, and it's time to get back to normal routine. Wet season begins. With it come things yummy: markets are abundant with fruits, and they are very cheap. Mangosteens are sold for 20 baht a kilo, gala apples 5 baht each, mangoes for 25 baht a kilo, papaya for 10 baht a kilo and Monthong durian for 40 baht a kilo. Aung San Suu Kyi was on my mind when I ate mangoes this week. It's not her predicament on the news these days; nor that framed picture resting askew on the wall, which I remember I bought in Myanmar. I am reminded of an article I read around the time before her husband died. It mentions that she likes Thai mangoes, this variety: The article also describes something I have never read anywhere else and at any time - a rare moment in which the nobel laureate burst into tears when her strictly monitored, very limi...

Filipino Store in Bangkok

Look at my loot! I can't believe my luck. Two days ago, a friend and I went to the Filipino Store in Silom. I should have blogged about this right away but I was busy eating! For someone who misses the food of home very much, this is palatal rapture. And guess what was my appetizer for lunch today -- the blessed bagoong! (absent in the photos; fridge-tucked away) With tomatoes aplenty, my alimentary canal was probably the most indulged in the Sukhumvit 101 area today. The sopas is for my kiddo. And I'm getting myself a big, pink fish and some veggies for the sinigang sa sampalok. Last night I noshed on pancit canton chilli mansi. A familiar yum that went with routine clicking on the keyboard made a very delightful evening! That was one time I wished I had Filipino neighbors in the apartment. The sunflower crackers and about two packets of noodles are free. But the best part really is the price. These goodies are affordable. I just love their business common sense. They posted...
