It's the season and to me it's not complete without the Hallelujah Chorus. The other thing is majestic choirs move me. Here are two videos by the Brooklyn Tabernacle and the Mormon Tabernacle Choirs. I love both versions of what probably is the most famous part of Handel's Messiah . I get gooseflesh on "King of kings! ... Lord of lords ...." Happy holidays, everyone! Walter Cronkite conducts. Things around me this week are calmer compared to last week. It's great to get back to normal that's also filled with faves to report: 1. Parcel from Lancashire . Inside is a little wrapped box. On it is written NOT TO BE OPENED UNTIL CHRISTMAS. I hope I can stand the suspense. 2. Last week of OT (overtime) this year . It's great to come home at 4.30, not 9 PM. Since Tuesday I've been enjoying longer evenings of relaxation - lie down when I want to, neglect domestic chores for awhile and nobody minds; sit in front of the computer as long as I want. 3. Foot soak and midnite snacking while chatting with former college mates - one in Virginia and the other, right in Bangkok. It's a fun kind of multi-tasking. 4. DVDs . I bought Bedtime Stories, a Walt Disney family comedy for CJ and a special edition of Discovery Channel's Nostradamus for me. They're worth the entertainment value they promised on the cover. 5. We're posting our favorite Mommy Moments entries this week. Mine are those that have something to do with my interests: the entries from precious gift and music themes. But then with all the other interests and the fun times it's hard to choose really. I am so glad I can say that because bad days like when Cj throws a tantrum drive me crazy. I have a kind of slow time recovering from emotions out of upsetting moments that involve Cj. But the advice goes, "dwell on the positive" so dwell I try. Here's a photo taken at Cj's school. As I mentioned on my post last week , Cj does not like his pic taken nowadays. This was no different with his back to the camera. I asked his dad to click anyway because I want Cj to have a visual record of his first teacher. According to legend, King George II of England rose to his feet when the Hallelujah Chorus was sung. Following protocol his subjects rose up as well. Thus began the tradition of audiences around the world rising during the Hallelujah performace. There are many speculations as to why the king stood or if he even stood at all. The Bangkok Combined Choir is composed of volunteer singers of around twenty nationalities. Every year in December, the choir performs Handel's Messiah. I sang once. (pure luck: there was no audition in 2000) Rehearsals got me thinking of the tradition of standing when the Hallelujah Chorus is sang. I googled what people have to say and my today is a list of opinions about audience decorum during the chorus: 1. The Hallelujah Chorus is like an anthem for the church. Whenever you hear it you are supposed to stand up. 2. Standing for the Hallelujah Chorus just interrupts the performance. 3. People should not be taught that they need to stand up at a certain time ...

Will it be cliche-ish if I raved about The Sound of Music ? I reckon it will. Right, I won't rave. Classics are classics. Oliver!, The Wizard of Oz and My Fair Lady are treasures at the top of my musical movie list. Other greats I like are Chicago , Moulin Rouge , Evita , Grease , Staying Alive . The King and I is banned in Thailand. I must have seen a few clips when I was a kid, but I don't remember ever watching the movie in its entirety. If I'm going to watch it, it will have to be the one starred in by Debora Kerr and Yul Brynner. I love classics obviously but you already know that. To me an awesome musical is one that is not just fun to listen to, but carries a moving message about the beauty of the human spirit and portrays the intricacies of our nature so well. Musical Monday He congratulated her for passing some national exam. They bumped into each other at the luncheon that followed. He flirted. She blushed.
